Does My Child Need Photos?

This is ACTRA’s advice about photos for children.

First of all, babies and toddlers NEVER need professional photos. If your child is of school age, a school picture or snap shot would be acceptable for submission to most talent agents (especially if your child is young and you are only seeking an interview). The problem with getting professional photos done before you join an agency is that the new agent may feel the photo you just invested time and money in does not accurately represent your child. You may end up spending more money than you expected on a re-shoot. On the other hand, first impressions are what will get you in the door. So, if you are planning to use a school photo or snap shot, make sure it’s a good one!

Once you find an agent to represent your child, a professional photo is a MUST! A single standard black and white 8x10 head or ¾ shot with at least 25 to 50 copies is all you need to begin. Avoid investing a great deal of money at this point as kids grow and change so quickly, you may very well have to repeat the process in six months.
